Workshops Now Open!

We're excited to offer Basic Electronics and Learn to Solder Workshops! If you're at all curious about how electronics work, or have wanted to learn how to solder so you can put a kit together or repair something, these are for you! Both are made possible by a City of San Luis Obispo Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion grant, and we particularly encourage people who are underrepresented in STEM to sign up. We provide a welcoming environment free of gatekeeping, and encourage asking questions and learning. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, or gender identity), national origin, disability, or age.

Learn to Solder Workshops

You will learn how to use a soldering iron and learn about the materials used in soldering including types of solder, flux, and soldering iron tips.  We only use lead-free solder.  We will put together 2 small soldering kits that feature "large" through-hole components and blinking LEDs.  Magnifiers are available to use, and reading glasses may be helpful.

These are in-person, held at our facility in San Luis Obispo, open to adults only (18+).

Basic Electronics Workshops

We'll go over what components like switches, resistors, capacitors, and batteries do; what a circuit board is; we'll explain voltage, current, and resistance and how they relate to each other; and we'll go over what analog and digital mean and how computers know information about the world around them.  We'll focus on learning the vocabulary of electronics, and we'll put together some basic circuits in class.  No soldering is required.

These are in-person, held at our facility in San Luis Obispo, open to adults only (18+).
